The Songkhla Road Construction Center was formerly known as the Songkhla Mechanical Equipment Center. It was renamed the Songkhla Road Construction Center in 1985. The center was established in 1965 through a cooperation agreement between the Thai and Japanese governments under the Colombo Plan, aimed at fostering mutual understanding and promoting development in the region. In this regard, the Japanese government provided construction machinery worth approximately 20 million baht and sent 10 Japanese experts to support the training of Thai technicians. The first project was the construction of the Songkhla-Chana-Nathawi road. The Songkhla Center was officially opened on April 16, 1965, by the Prime Minister of Thailand (Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn) and the Japanese Ambassador to Thailand representing the Japanese government. The Songkhla-Chana-Nathawi road was completed and opened for use on November 11, 1968. The Japanese experts then returned to Japan, and the Japanese government sent a new team of three experts to assist for another two years, constructing the Thepha-Sabayoi road as the second project. This team of experts returned to Japan in 1970. Later, in 1991, the Thai government requested assistance from the Japanese government for additional road construction machinery to replace the old machinery that the Japanese government had provided. The equipment, previously donated but deteriorated due to prolonged use, was later donated to the Songkhla Construction Center in 1993 by the Japanese government. In that year, the Japanese government provided 25 pieces of machinery to the center and sent two Japanese experts to train its staff before returning to Japan the same year. Subsequently, in 2009, the Director-General of the Department of Highways issued an order transferring the authority, responsibilities, assets, budget, debts, rights, and obligations of the Surat Thani Construction Center to the Songkhla Construction Center. This order, No. J.1.9/13/2552, dated August 13, 2009, formally transferred the responsibility to the Surat Thani Construction Center. The handover took place between the Director of the Surat Thani Construction Center and the Director of the Songkhla Construction Center on October 1, 2009.
